If you’ve just moved into a new home and are struggling to find space for all the possessions you’re unpacking, today’s blog post is for you. I’ve done my research and found 5 clever storage hacks that’ll help you to make the most of the space in your new apartment…

You know what it’s like: You decide to move. You find the city pad of your dreams. You begin packing. You declutter. You take a bag of things to the charity shop. You wrap up what’s left of your belongings and you pick up the keys to your shiny new apartment. Then you try to unpack. But there’s a problem – your stuff has somehow grown during the moving process!

You now feel like you’ve brought twice as many things with you and are wondering if you’ll have to live surrounded by cardboard boxes forever. Well, I’ve got good news for you – you don’t. You can find extra storage space that wasn’t there before with these 5 hacks so let’s get started…
1 CLOTHING HACK
If your apartment comes with a fitted wardrobe or alcove cupboard you can make the most of this space by making this simple DIY hanger hack. You can use a hook and length of metal chain (here Brit.co have spray painted the chain in a hot pink – love it!) to cascade your clothing and quadruple your hanging space.

You could even use this hack to plan outfits – if you hang a pair of trousers with a top and blazer, you don’t even have to think about what you’re going to wear in the morning – it’s already organised for you!
2 LITERATURE HACK
Those IKEA spice racks get everywhere and this is yet another way to use them in your home. Get extra storage for books where you didn’t think there was enough space by mounting a few IKEA spice racks on the wall. Hang them behind a door – the space where a door opens is useless for furniture but these racks are so narrow that they won’t be a problem.

They can also fit on narrow walls between doorways or in tight corners. And you can even screw them onto the end of kitchen cabinets or wardrobes to create a vertical book shelf for cookbooks or fiction.
3 ALCOVE HACK
If you have an alcove anywhere in your new apartment, don’t overlook this space. Pop up some shelves or add a cupboard door and it can become a handy storage space. You may have seen that I turned an alcove cupboard in my bedroom into a fitting dressing table, so now all my essentials are neatly tucked away until I need them – and then I’ve got everything at hand.

An alcove can also make a great mini-office space, which is essential for that side-hustle business, blog or podcast you’re running! It’s like having an extra room if you add a worktop, lamp and shelves for your folders. Alternatively, you could simply use the space for extra storage – a couple of hooks and shelves will give you space for stashing camping gear, sports equipment or even cleaning supplies.
4 KITCHEN HACK
If you’re into baking, you’ve probably moved your wire cooling racks with you. If so, don’t store them folded flat – prop them up and use them to increase the shelving space inside your kitchen cupboards. Just just put anything too heavy/breakable/family heirloom on top of them, just in case they collapse! Stick to lightweight melamine plates and outdoor plastic cups, bread and cereal boxes!

5 BATHROOM HACK
This trick can actually be used in any room of the house but it’s in the smallest room that it makes the most difference. Adding a shelf above the door is a great idea to make the most of that little bit of wasted space between the door frame and the ceiling.
